Weekly Leader Training for Adults: Unit 4, Session 1—God Shares His Name

December 2, 2021 | Daniel Davis

Tips for Teaching This Week’s Session of The Gospel Project for Adults

Every week for Volume 4: From Captivity to the Wilderness, Ken Braddy, Lifeway’s director of Sunday School, will offer guidance to help leaders prepare to lead and teach each session of The Gospel Project for Adults.

This week’s training notes:

This week, your group will be studying Unit 4, Session 1, God Shares His Name, which focuses on the story of Moses, the one God would send to provide deliverance for His people. God revealed Himself to Moses as “I AM,” identifying His transcendent self-existence.

So here are your three things to know, read, and do as you prepare for this week’s session:

Something to know

One of the most interesting names for God is “I Am.” God describes Himself in this way to Moses and Jesus also refers to Himself in this way. So I would invest some additional time exploring this name in greater detail by reading all the commentary for point 2 on page 13, as well as the extra commentary and illustrations on page 18-19 of your leader guide. It will give you a greater understanding of this name God uses.

Something to read

For something to read, we’ve included a link to an article by Kevin Halloran in the Additional Resources called 5 Ways Exodus Confronts Our Secular Age. This article is an excellent devotional read of an overview of Exodus that captures what our secular world needs to hear today from the historical stories of Exodus. The concluding paragraph sums it up well:

“There’s a lot in Exodus the secularist would reject. First to go would likely be the miraculous events like the burning bush, the plagues, the provision of manna, or the parting of the Red Sea. But the greatest miracle of Exodus—and of the entire Bible—is how a holy God would make a way for sinful people to dwell with him.”

Something to do

As the story of Moses starts to resonate with your group, revealing that God can use anyone for His glory, help your group understand that being freed from the oppression of sin and guilt ourselves, we can strive to share the good news to others. One tip is to share stories from past famous missionaries or missionaries that your church supports and sends. Make the connection that we are all called to bring the message of hope and good news to those around us. Encourage your group to find simple ways to be intentional about doing so to partner with God in growing the Kingdom.

Mr. Braddy, Thank you for your comments on this lesson, God Shares His Name. Using it for the first time but definitely not the last.
