REMEMBERING GOD’S FAITHFULNESS HELPS US REMAIN FAITHFUL.
SCRIPTURE | Joshua 3:12–4:7
CENTRAL TRUTH
In our journey with God, we can set up spiritual markers to help us remember His goodness and His faithfulness.
KEY QUESTION
HOW COULD THE STONES SERVE AS REMINDERS OF BOTH GOD’S FAITHFULNESS AND ISRAEL’S DISOBEDIENCE? WHY WOULD REMEMBERING THIS BE IMPORTANT TOO?
KEEP IN MIND
Remembering is a good thing—except when it’s not. For some students, looking back means reliving past mistakes and sin. Remembering feels painful. Here’s the deal with past sin that they’ve already confessed: it’s done. Scripture makes it clear that God removes our sin “as far as the east is from the west” (Ps. 103:12), meaning He removes it completely. If we’ve repented of those sins, then God doesn’t want us to dwell on them. The problem with sin is that we might still face lasting consequences—even after God forgives us. But we never have to wonder if God has forgiven us. If we’ve confessed our sin and repented, or turned away from sin and turned toward God, then we can walk in forgiveness and freedom. We can look back and see God’s faithfulness to forgive us, even when looking back hurts.
APPLICATION
WHAT SPIRITUAL “STONES” CAN YOU USE TO REMEMBER GOD’S FAITHFULNESS?
THE WIN
FOR THE STUDENT: Students can use an actual stone and draw a scene on it. They can also keep a yearly journal, make notes in their phones, wear a piece of jewelry, take photos and hang them in their rooms, paint a picture of their own, or write a song or a poem. There are many ways to remember God’s faithfulness.
FOR THE LEADER: As leaders, we can sometimes forget God’s faithfulness to us. We know He has been faithful, but we get distracted by today’s agenda and forget to look back. Spend some time looking back. Make a list of all the ways God has been good to you or answered your prayers.
