What Adult Groups Can Expect from The Gospel Project this Fall

May 28, 2021 | Aaron Armstrong

If you had to boil down adult ministry to one thing, it’s this: helping them make disciple-making disciples. No matter our background, no matter our familiarity or comfort with the Bible, that’s what we’re all meant to be. Over the past year, we have been reimagining The Gospel Project for Adults to further that end. We want to help groups engage with Scripture deeply, and see lives changed as a result. Here’s a look at what adult groups can expect from The Gospel Project this fall.

focusing on the Word with the daily discipleship guide

In this new cycle, we’re helping groups focus on the Word to an even greater degree with the new Daily Discipleship Guide.

studying personally with daily devotions

The Gospel Project for Adults Daily Discipleship Guide for Fall 2021

Reading and studying the Bible personally is key to our growth as believers. It stands heads and shoulders above any other spiritual discipline. That’s why we’re prioritizing it in the Daily Discipleship Guide. Each session has five daily devotions, which make up the majority of that week’s content and time in the Bible. These devotions are the first part of the session, but can be used at any time. Each devotion features a Bible passage reference, a short reflection, and a personal application question. Every devotion connects directly to the study in one of two ways:

  • Highlighting the session’s focal passages
  • Drawing from the larger body of Scripture to address themes within the session

gathering together for group time

Group time is a simplified experience for adult groups, with a two-page discussion guide including the following:

  • The key points of the session.
  • Interactive questions and activities to address the needs of a variety of learning styles.
  • Session application questions that follow the “head, heart, and hands” model running throughout the curriculum across all ages. This approach helps group members consider how they should think, feel, and live differently in light of Scripture. (For more on this, keep reading.) These questions can be used in group time or as part of a smaller discipleship group setting.

learning to study the Bible with your Bible

Reading and studying the Bible is absolutely life-changing. We want everyone to do this! But it is increasingly clear that few Christians know how to do so effectively. To help, we are doing two things:

  • Including a simple Bible study tool called the Seven Arrows to help group members learn the mechanics of Bible study.
  • We are not printing the Bible text in the Daily Discipleship Guide. (Yes, you read that correctly.) Counterintuitive? Maybe. But we believe the best way to study the Bible is with you own Bible. To study the focal passages in context and see their place in the larger story of Scripture. In other words, to learn the landscape of the Bibles as they read the Bible. Whether you prefer the CSB, ESV, KJV, or any other translation, this study is accessible to you.

equipping you to teach and lead effectively with new Leader Guide

The Leader Guide contains everything adult group leaders need to effectively teach and lead the discussion in one convenient package. This includes teaching outlines, commentary, and optional interactive activities and illustrations.

preparing to teach and lead

The teaching outlines and biblical commentary are designed to set your leaders up for success. The teaching outlines feature several discussion questions and interactive moments to address multiple learning styles. There are also key moments to use the free doctrine explainer videos found on gospelproject.lifeway.com in every session.

The biblical commentary is a deep-but-accessible exploration of each passage. This commentary reveals the passage’s meaning and its overall place in the storyline of Scripture. That desire for accessibility isn’t limited to how commentary is written though. We are also explaining key theological terms that appear throughout. These are the words that cannot not be used at times, like Trinity, sovereignty, and so forth. But we don’t want to make assumptions about leaders’ knowledge or familiarity with them. That’s why we are including simple definitions of these terms.

responding to God’s word holistically

Gospel-centered Bible study encourages a holistic response to God’s Word. That’s why the My Response” section focuses on how knowing God leads to changed lives in every aspect. This section includes questions and explanations that help group members focus on the following aspects:

  • Head: How does what I’ve learned affect what I think about God and the gospel?
  • Heart: How does what I’ve learned affect my love for God and the gospel?
  • Hands: How does what I’ve learned affect how I live for God and the gospel?

engaging together meaningfully

The final section of each session is the “extras.” These section include additional commentary, as well as optional interactive activities or illustrations. These include cultural and literary illustrations, as well as videos to watch and discuss. The extras feature gives leaders all the tools for a well-rounded group experience in one package—no additional downloads necessary.

furthering the mission in adult groups

With a new look and experience, The Gospel Project provides you with the best tools possible to equip your adult groups for gospel-centered study. To help them become disciple-making disciples, no matter their background or familiarity with the Christian faith.
