A Family Devotion for Thanksgiving

November 25, 2015 | Alyssa Jones

Thanksgiving is a time rich with traditions: family, feast, and football. As you gather with your family at the table this week, it is good to talk about the things for which you are thankful. But don’t forget the One who has given all these things.

Whether this past year has left you feeling encouraged and refreshed or weary and wanting, give thanks to the Lord. Giving thanks to God shows that we trust Him and His purposes no matter what. Consider using this short devotion to lead your children in a time of thanksgiving.

  • Ask: “Does anyone know why we celebrate Thanksgiving?” Explain that we celebrate Thanksgiving as a time to thank God for His blessings. Thanksgiving is a special time to say thank you to God.
  • Ask: “What are you thankful for?” Invite each family member to share a few things he or she is thankful for. Point out that these things are all good gifts, and we can be thankful that we have them.
  • Ask: “Who gives us these good gifts?” Explain that every good gift is from God. (James 1:17)

Open your Bible to Psalm 107:1. Read the verse aloud or, if your child can read, encourage her to read the verse aloud.

Lead your family in a time of prayer:

Father God, we come to You with thankful hearts. Year after year, You are faithful to us. You give us good gifts—far more than we deserve. Most of all, Lord, we are thankful for You. You love us so much that You sent Your Son, Jesus, to save us from our sins. Thank You for welcoming us into Your family. We give ourselves to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
