What happens when we are saved by Jesus? Most often Christians will talk about the forgiveness of sins that comes from our faith in Jesus. And that is definitely true but as we’ll see, there is much more to our salvation than our sins being forgiven.

At the heart of our salvation is our union with Christ. One of the best ways to understand this is through the lens of a covenant.

A covenant is a binding promise. In the case of salvation, the promise is that through faith in Christ, the Lord is our God and we are His people. For how long? Forever.

The Bible also uses the picture of marriage, a covenant between one man and one woman for life, to describe the relationship between Jesus and His people. Jesus is the groom, and the church is His bride. 

But our union with Christ isn’t just in this covenantal sense. The Bible describes this union experientially as well, as Christ dwelling within our hearts through faith, and us simultaneously dwelling in Him. And if that wasn’t enough, that Christ is in us, and we are in Him, we’re told that Christ is our life! We live because He lives. 

And do you know what the best thing about that is? If we live because He lives, that means that our union with Christ will never end. It has no end date. He will never leave us nor forsake us. We are united to Him for all of eternity.
