Many non-Christians think Christians believe some pretty odd things. And one of the strangest has to be the virgin birth. This has been questioned, ridiculed, mocked, and lampooned for centuries… but despite this, Christians keep believing it. Why?

Because, as we’ll see, it is foundational to the Christian faith and essential to the gospel. 

The Bible tells us that Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. This happened in fulfillment of a prophecy in Isaiah 7:14, one ultimately understood to be about the Messiah, the promised rescuer of God’s people.

The virgin birth reminds us that Jesus was a human being, who grew and learned and played. But it also tells us that He was a child with no human father. He was a human being who was not merely human. He is God the Son, who humbled by taking on human flesh. To live among us, to live for us, to die for us, and to rise again from the dead.

This belief is strange, without question. It is hard to understand. But this strange thing we believe is good news for all who believe. The Jesus we believe in is God. The Jesus we believe in is a man. And the Jesus we believe in is the only One who can rescue any of us.
