Jesus, our Prophet, declares words of eternal life.
Scripture: Deuteronomy 18:18-20; Mark 1:21-22; John 6:66-69; 14:6-7
Central Truth
While Old Testament prophets were great, none of them compare to Jesus, who was spoken of by Moses. Jesus not only speaks the Word of God with authority, but He also is the Word of God, who declares eternal life for those who believe in Him.
Key Question
Why do most prophets point to Jesus? What does this tell you about Him?
Keep in Mind
Some students may struggle in making the connection between the Old Testament prophets and Jesus. Students may not have a clear understanding of who the prophets were or what they did. Consider spending some time further explaining how the prophets were God’s messengers to God’s people. These prophets, such as Moses, Elijah, and Isaiah, not only warned the people about the consequences of straying from the Lord, but they also pointed to a future prophet—a coming Messiah. While these prophets displayed great faith and power, none of them compares to God’s Son, Jesus—the greatest Prophet.
APPLICATION
Some people thought Jesus’s words were foolish and rejected Him, but others believed Him. What do you believe about the gospel?
THE WIN
FOR THE STUDENT: While we no longer rely on prophets to hear from God, we must examine every message we are taught. The message of this world stands in stark contrast to the message of Scripture, and it is often delivered through what students take in on social media and through movies, music, and so on. It’s critical for students to place all of their beliefs next to God’s truth so they can detect false ideas that could lead them astray.
FOR THE LEADER: God’s people waited for thousands of years for a Messiah, longing for Him to come. Jesus, the Word in flesh, embodied the character of God because He is God. He is loving, kind, compassionate, sacrificial, forgiving, merciful, and holy—and we get to know Him! We should treasure this amazing gift as we teach students about Him.
