Weekly Leader Training for Students: Unit 26, Session 2—The Covenant-Making Priest

October 10, 2023 | Alecia Bryant

The Lord’s Supper showed a picture of Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross and affirmed His victory.

Scripture: Matthew 26:17-30

Central Truth

It’s important for us to recognize what we are taking part in when we participate in the Lord’s Supper. We are acknowledging the truth in Jesus’s words, but we are also remembering His suffering, celebrating His resurrection, and embracing eternal hope.

Key Question

Why is it important for us to understand the significance of the Lord’s supper?

Keep in Mind

How many of us, including our students, have taken part in the Lord’s Supper too casually? It’s likely most of your students have done so as well. It’s also very possible they did this because they simply didn’t have a full understanding of why we still take the Lord’s Supper today. Many of them have probably grown up watching the Lord’s Supper take place, maybe even taking part in it before they accepted Christ. But this ordinance is a beautiful and sacred act for believers. We want to help our students foster an accurate understanding of this moment so they can fully experience it the way Scripture commands us to—identifying with Christ in His suffering and offering gratitude for His sacrifice.

APPLICATION

What can you do to frequently remember Jesus’s sacrifice and not become desensitized to it?

THE WIN

FOR THE STUDENT: We want to help students understand why we take part in this church ordinance—to remember Christ’s broken body and spilled blood for our sin. But we also do this as a way to identify with Jesus in His suffering. It is a symbol of our accepting His gift of sacrifice. The Lord’s Supper reminds us that we have a Savior, and we also have hope for His return.

FOR THE LEADER: The longer we follow Jesus, we sometimes develop a dangerous mindset: we allow Jesus’s sacrifice to become common or ordinary. We allow ourselves to lose the awe of the price Jesus paid for our sins, becoming desensitized to it. However, what Christ did is anything but ordinary; it was the fulfillment of God’s promise to redeem us all.
