Weekly Leader Training for Students: Unit 30, Session 5—The Church Preaches the Gospel

February 20, 2024 | Alecia Bryant

God has sent His people into the world to tell others about Christ.

Scripture: Matthew 9:35-38; 10:1-15; Romans 10:14-15

Central Truth

We can go into the world and tell people about Jesus with the assurance God has called us to do it, and He’ll be with us as we go. We should absolutely pray for more people to know Jesus, but we should also tell people about Him.

Key Question

Why is it important to remember there is an urgency to share the gospel with others?

Keep in Mind

Each day can feel really long. While students sit in class or at home, the minutes drag by as they wait for something more fun. But time really is short. In just a little while, Christ will return (see Heb. 10:37). We never know how long our lives or the lives of those around us will be. Every moment matters, and when we lose the urgency to share Christ with others, we lose opportunities.

Students especially may not feel this urgency. When we’re young, we’re tempted to think we have plenty of time. We falsely assume other people also have plenty of time to respond to Christ. But sadly, we can all think of tragedies which have taken the lives of young people. While we don’t want to use this as a scare tactic to coerce someone into making a salvation decision, we do want to emphasize that we aren’t in control. We want to urge students to make decisions for Christ today!

APPLICATION

How can you take steps to move beyond simply praying for people and join other “workers” in the harvest?

THE WIN

FOR THE STUDENT: While praying does take time and discipline, moving our feet into action takes effort. We must push students to look to see where God is at work. They can look for others who are already working and go join them!

FOR THE LEADER: Brainstorm some ideas to get your students moving into action. Take them to a local food bank, nursing home, park, or homeless shelter. Although it may make them uncomfortable, it will stretch them and show them the importance of putting action to their words.
