The Holy Spirit living inside of us helps us honor God.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20; 8:4,7-13; Galatians 5:22-25
Central Truth
We have a true Friend, a Friend Jesus promised would come: the Holy Spirit. Jesus called Him a Counselor because He would guide us, comfort us, and help us make holy decisions.
Key Question
How should knowing your body is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit affect your daily choices?
Keep in Mind
In this lesson, there is room to have real discussion about sexual sin. Some students will find this topic makes them uncomfortable. Some may even operate under a mindset that their sex life is their business and no one else’s—not even God’s. You’ll want to be sensitive to all students in the room, especially taking their age into consideration. If possible, always allow parents to have important conversations with their students first. Consider giving parents a heads up that a great discussion concerning biblical sexuality is upcoming.
Culture isn’t going to define sin the way Scripture defines sin, especially sexual sin. In fact, culture sometimes won’t acknowledge sin as sin at all. Instead, many people adopt the mentality that “what’s right for you may not be right for me.” As believers, we can’t allow this to be our guide. Encourage students that our understanding of sin and of what pleases God must be shaped by His Word and illuminated by the Holy Spirit living within us. If not, then we will slowly adopt a worldly understanding and justified view of sin
APPLICATION
Are there areas of your life that you haven’t allowed the gospel to influence: body, mind, or spirit? Explain.
THE WIN
FOR THE STUDENT: The gospel is the best news. It allows students to honor God with their whole being—body, mind, and spirit. These aren’t separate, and they aren’t independent of God. He cares about all that we are.
FOR THE LEADER: Sometimes we compartmentalize ourselves. We think God may only see or care about our spirits and not our bodies, minds, or emotions. In reality, they’re all intertwined. The transformation of our body, mind, and spirit isn’t instant; in fact, we can rest in knowing it’s a lifelong process.
