Maybe you’ve heard someone ask a question like this, can God create a stone so heavy He can’t lift it? This is a pretty common question typically asked when someone is trying to share the gospel. But believe it or not, it is actually a good question that can help us understand an important attribute of God.

The Bible describes and depicts God as being all-powerful. The technical term for this is omnipotence. God’s omnipotence means that there is nothing God cannot do so long as it does not contradict His own nature or law. God has power and authority over the universe He created, from the largest solar system to the smallest particle. 

Affirming that God is all-powerful does not mean that God can sin—since that would go against His perfect moral nature. And it also means that God cannot make a stone so heavy he can’t lift, because He can’t stop being God. 

So what does this mean for us as Christians? God’s omnipotence should be a source of rest and comfort for us. Because the all-powerful God is good, we do not need to fear how He will use His power. Instead, we can find comfort in the truth that He is working out all things for our good and joy.
