How Many Gods Are There? [99 in :99]

November 6, 2019 | Aaron Armstrong

What do Christians believe about God? Specifically, how many gods do we believe exist? Are there many gods that rule over different aspects of life and nature? Or is there One that made and rules over everything?
Let’s dig into this as we explore this central aspect of the nature of God.

The Bible emphatically declares that there is one, and only one, God. Not “gods”—plural.

God.

It doesn’t get any clearer than what is written in Deuteronomy 6:4, which says “The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” But that’s not the only time the Bible reveals this truth.

In both the Old and New Testaments, the biblical authors continually state that there is one God. And even God Himself confirms it by saying, “I am the Lord your God, and there is no other.”

This concept is summed up in the word “monotheism” which means “one god.” And in the days of the ancient Israelites, it was a radical concept. In fact, it still is!

Many of Israel’s neighbors worshiped many gods. They were polytheists. Others worshiped one god while also believing in the existence of many. They practiced what is called henotheism.

Today, we live in a time where people believe in many gods, and see all religions as equally valid, or invalid, depending on who you’re talking to.

But we believe something completely contrary to this. We believe that in all the cosmos, there is one God. Yahweh, the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth, the one who says, “I am the Lord and there is no other,”

He is the only one worthy of worship. And He commands all people everywhere to give Him all honor and praise and glory forever.
